The good point about the cue card is that it does not only mention the topic but also provides pointers that you can cover in under two minutes. • Where is it?

Leh, the capital of Ladakh is situated in the northernmost region of India. Situated 3,500 metres above sea level, it is encircled by magnificent desert valleys and snow-capped mountains.

• How did you know about it?

Initially, I heard about Leh through friends and family reminiscing about their experiences. Then, I took a virtual tour of that place through travel vlogs and documentaries. Looking at its breathtaking landscape and distinctive Tibetan culture, sparked my interest and made me want to visit and relish its beauty firsthand.

• What special features does it have?

Leh is unique due to its many remarkable aspects. The town is home to historically and spiritually significant buildings like the Leh Palace and historic monasteries like Thiksey and Hemis. Its distinct combination of craggy, arid mountains and the lush greenery of the Indus Valley adds to its allure.

• And explain why you think it is interesting.

Leh offers a captivating fusion of adventure, cultural diversity, and scenic beauty. Trekking, exploring ancient monasteries, and soaking in its tranquillity offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of the mountains.

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Western Ghats, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Munnar is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and natural beauty. This place is one of my favourites, and would love to tell you why through my cue card topic.

• Where is it?

Munnar is a district in the Idukki district of Kerala, situated at a height of almost 1,600 meters above sea level. The place is enveloped by lush tea plantations, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls.

• How did you know about it?

I decided to visit Munnar not only for its serene landscapes but also for the rainfall and elephant rides! I was captivated by the tales of its illustrious history in tea cultivation and the charm of its pristine surroundings. Moreover, the experiences people shared confirmed that visiting Munnar would be a worthwhile experience for me.

• What special features does it have?

Munnar is home to gorgeous lakes and expansive tea fields. The highest hill in South India, Anamudi, provides panoramic views of the plains and valleys below.

• And explain why you think it is interesting.

Munnar is a tranquil getaway destination because of its stunning natural landscapes. The mild climate and varied flora and fauna, create a perfect mood for trekking in early mornings, sipping tea during the day, and stargazing in the night. These activities provide a revitalising diversion from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I want to talk about a popular tourist destination, Chand Baori in Abhaneri, India for my cue card on “Describe a place in your country that you think is interesting.”

• Where is it?

In the Dausa area of Rajasthan, in the village of Abhaneri, sits the old stepwell known as Chand Baori. It is more than a millennium old and features remarkable technical and architectural marvels.

• How did you know about it?

I visited Chand Baori on a family trip when I was 15. Subsequently, I saw the identical Abhaneri Baori in the film Paheli, starring Rani Mukherjee. The place in the movie introduces a touch of magic realism, which reminded me of my visit and research about it in detail. 

• What special features does it have?

Constructed thousands of years ago, Chand Baori is one of the biggest and most ancient step wells in the world. Sometime during the ninth century, King Chanda constructed it. It has 3,500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry that descend 20 metres to the bottom of the well.

• And explain why you think it is interesting.

Stepwells were constructed in the dry regions of Rajasthan many years ago to supply water. Chand Baori is no longer utilised as a well, but its beautiful geometry still draws tourists from all over the world. Its name derives from King Chand Raja of the Gujara Pratihara clan, who was believed to be a descendant of Lord Ram's younger brother, Laxman. All things considered, the Chand Baori of Abhaneri is an interesting historical location that highlights India's rich architectural legacy.

For my cue card topic, I would like to talk about a fascinating city in India popular for its historical and cultural value, Mathura.

• Where is it?

Mathura is a historic city in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is recognized for being the birthplace of the esteemed Hindu god Lord Krishna and is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.

• How did you know about it?

I was introduced to Mathura's value when studying Indian mythology and history in school. My curiosity was sparked by the city's connection to Lord Krishna and its contribution to the growth of Hindu culture.

• What special features does it have?

There are several distinct attractions in Mathura. Numerous historic temples honouring Lord Krishna are scattered around the city, including his birthplace, the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple. Moreover, Mathura is famous for its unique Lathmar Holi celebrations. Unlike the usual playful throwing of colours, Lathmar Holi involves women playfully hitting men with sticks, while the men shield themselves with shields and sing Holi songs. This tradition is said to commemorate the playful love between Radha and Krishna.

• And explain why you think it is interesting.

Both pilgrims and tourists are drawn to Mathura because of its rich mythology and association with Lord Krishna. The vibrant festivities, traditional delicacies, and bustling markets add to its charm. It's a place where one can delve into India's spiritual heritage and experience the essence of Hindu mythology.

Q3. What factors lead to regional variations within your nation?

A3. Different aspects, including geography, climate, history, and cultural legacy, can cause regions to differ. For instance, areas with distinctive topography, such as mountains or coasts, could have distinct economic activities and lifestyles that are shaped by their environment.

Q4. Do people your parents' age like to explore new things, or are young people the only ones who enjoy doing so?

A4. The desire to try new things and pursue personal growth is not limited by age in India. But, it is limited by choice. Some children might be reserved and avoid travelling or playing, while some elders are adventurous and friendly with even the unknown. However, the commonality lies in the ways that all age groups adopt the newest technologies and learn new activities, at their pace.
