Southern University and A&M College (also known as Southern University, SUBR, or SU) is a public, historically black land-grant institution located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As the largest historically black college or university (HBCU) in Louisiana, Southern University serves as the flagship institution of the Southern University System and is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Its main campus spans 512 acres, while an additional 372-acre agricultural experimental station is situated five miles north of the main campus on Scotts Bluff, overlooking the Mississippi River in northern Baton Rouge.
The university's athletic teams, known as the Jaguars, compete in 13 intercollegiate sports as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in NCAA Division I. Additionally, Southern University is home to the renowned collegiate marching band, the Human Jukebox, which has proudly represented the school since 1947.
Campus
Lake Kernan runs through the heart of the campus, with the Mississippi River marking its western boundary. Since 1960, the campus has seen the construction of over 2,000,000 square feet of building space. Fondly known as "The Bluff," the campus is a blend of modern development and natural beauty.
The Smith-Brown Memorial Union, a 66,200-square-foot multipurpose facility, serves as a central hub for extracurricular activities. Recently renovated, the Union features a six-restaurant food court with popular dining options, barber and beauty shops, TV rooms, 12 bowling lanes, a game room for billiards, video games, and quieter pursuits, an art gallery, a browsing room, a ballroom, meeting and conference rooms, and a U.S. post office. It also provides office space for student organisations.
