How to Convert Percentage to GPA?
The method to convert percentage to GPA depends on the target GPA scale. Most students applying to the USA, UK, or Canada calculate GPA on a 4.0 scale by multiplying the percentage by 4 and dividing by 100. If you are unsure which scale to use, start with the 4.0 scale. The 5.0 scale uses the same method with 5 as the multiplier, while the 10.0 scale has two methods, explained below.
Convert Percentage to GPA on 4.0 Scale (USA, UK, Canada)
The 4.0 scale is the most widely used GPA system, especially at North American and British universities.
Formula: GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4
Example: If you scored 85%, your GPA on 4.0 scale = (85 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.40
Note: The formula GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4 gives an approximate result. Many universities assign GPA based on letter-grade bands instead. For example, the formula gives 3.40 for 85%, but under a common US scale where 83% to 86% is a B, the same score equals a 3.0 GPA. Band cutoffs differ by university. For official applications, your GPA is determined by your university’s transcript evaluation, not a self-calculated formula.
Convert Percentage to GPA on 5.0 Scale (Europe and Asia)
The 5.0 scale is used in some universities across Europe and Asia.
Formula: GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 5
Example: If you scored 75%, your GPA on 5.0 scale = (75 ÷ 100) × 5 = 3.75
Note: This formula applies only where 5.0 is the highest grade. Some countries, such as Germany, use a 1.0 to 5.0 scale where 1.0 is the best grade, so this formula does not apply there.
Convert Percentage to GPA on 10.0 Scale (India, Nepal & Asian Countries)
The 10.0 scale is the most common GPA system in India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries.
The following method is used under the CBSE conversion method:
Formula: GPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
Example: If you scored 92%, your GPA on the CBSE 10.0 scale = 92 ÷ 9.5 = 9.68.If your university uses a different method, you can use a direct linear conversion:
Linear / Direct Formula: GPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 10
Example: If you scored 92%, your GPA on a linear 10.0 scale = (92 ÷ 100) × 10 = 9.20.
Note: The 9.5 formula is an indicative CBSE conversion and should not be treated as a universal formula for all Indian universities. Some universities use their own conversion rules. For example, VTU uses a specific formula for certain schemes: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10.

GPA to Percentage Conversion
To convert GPA into percentage, multiply your GPA by 25 for a 4.0 scale. This is the reverse of the percentage to GPA formula and gives you an approximate percentage equivalent of your GPA score.
Formula: Percentage = GPA × 25
Example: If your GPA is 3.2, then:
3.2 × 25 = 80%
Step 1: Note your GPA
Check your academic transcript or marksheet and note your GPA along with the scale it is based on. Make sure you know whether your GPA is on a 4.0, 5.0, or 10.0 scale before applying the formula.
