Question

Hi, Can a good GRE and TOEFL score along with a good SOP make up for an average CGPA(7.53) to get into good MEM colleges(Duke, Purdue, etc)

A good GRE score will not make up for a low GPA especially at top schools like NYU, USC, Purdue, and Columbia, GPAs are used to determine if you are really to take graduate courses, and the graduate schools expects a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The admitted GPA for top schools is roughly 3.8 on a 4.0 scale. The interview portion is also useful in explaining if your CGPA is low for a particular reason and / or how you plan to ensure a better GPA for your MS. The level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and between departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection factor.
But the CGPA is a very important selection factor. Every department within each of the schools has different CGPA criteria, quite obviously higher for the better ones. But the selection process never goes solely by either GRE or CGPA, rather a comprehensive profile of a student is considered. In this process a low GRE score can be compensated by a high CGPA, but a low CGPA cannot be compensated by a high GRE score. Nevertheless, it can be compensated by strong work experience or some very good publications.
