How to individualize personal statements to schools?

So all of the personal statement advice I've seen says to tailor each statement to the school and demonstrate that you've done your homework on the programme. However, other than not copying and pasting a statement and possibly mentioning some faculty, how do you go about doing this? Most of the programmes I'm applying to are fairly similar; they focus on the field I'm interested in and have good interdisciplinary programmes. How do I demonstrate that I've researched the programme without sounding generic or overly complimentary (i.e., this is the best programme ever)?
