Part-Time Work and Income Options for Indian Students

International students at Oxford on a UK Student visa can generally work up to 20 hours per week during term time, across all jobs combined, whether on or off campus. They can usually work full-time during official university vacations, subject to the conditions of their visa.

Research students (DPhil and MSc by Research) follow no fixed term dates, so they can exceed 20 hours only during a vacation approved in writing by their supervisor. Self-employment, business activity and permanent full-time roles are not allowed.

  • On-campus jobs: Oxford colleges and departments regularly hire students for administrative, library, and teaching-support roles. At the National Living Wage of GBP 12.71 (approx INR 1,640) per hour, the 20-hour weekly works out to roughly GBP 254 (INR 41,640) per week during term time.
  • Oxford Careers Service internships: The University's Internship Office runs a Summer Internship Programme and micro-internships lasting two to five days, both intended for students to gain UK work experience alongside their studies.
  • Post-study work via the Graduate visa: TheUK Student visa grants two years of unsponsored work permission for bachelor's and master's graduates and three years for DPhil graduates. From 1 January 2027, the Graduate visa period for non-doctoral applicants will shorten to 18 months, while DPhil graduates will retain the three years.
