Exams Required to Study in Ireland for Indian Students (2026)

Ireland asks every non-native English speaker to prove English proficiency before admission, and a smaller set of programmes require a subject-specific aptitude test on top of that requirement. An Indian student applying to an MS in Data Analytics at Dublin City University faces a different exam list than one applying to the Smurfit MBA at UCD or to graduate-entry medicine at RCSI. 

Here are the types of exams required for Ireland:

• English Proficiency Exams: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Duolingo English Test.
• Subject-Specific Exams: GMAT for selected MBA programmes, HPAT for undergraduate medicine, and GAMSAT for graduate-entry medicine.

Irish universities require English language proficiency evidence to confirm that international students can understand lectures, complete coursework, and communicate effectively in their English-medium learning environment. IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is one of the most widely accepted English language tests for admission to graduate and postgraduate courses at universities in Ireland. For university admissions, you should select the IELTS Academic version rather than IELTS General Training, unless your programme specifically states otherwise. 

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) 

Every university in Ireland accepts TOEFL iBT as proof of English proficiency. Both the standard in-centre TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition are widely accepted by universities in Ireland for admissions.

PTE (Pearson Test of English) 

Major Irish universities and immigration authorities widely accept the PTE Academic exam for study and visa applications. PTE results are usually available within 48 hours, which makes it a useful option when your application deadline is approaching.

DET (Duolingo English Test)

Most universities in Ireland accept Duolingo as an alternative to IELTS. For Irish study visa purposes, ISD lists a minimum DET score of 75 for most courses, although the university or course may require a higher score for admission. Duolingo’s relatively low cost compared to IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE has made it a popular choice among Indian applicants over the past few admissions cycles.

A limited number of disciplines in Ireland require an aptitude or admission test in addition to English language proficiency. Competitive MBA programmes may require the GMAT, while the GRE is typically required only for selected postgraduate or research-based courses. Medicine programmes in Ireland have separate requirements, with HPAT used for undergraduate medicine and GAMSAT used for graduate-entry medicine, which is the route relevant to most applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree. 

GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

The GRE is not a standard requirement for most master's degrees in Ireland. HPAT (Health Professions Admission Test)

The HPAT-Ireland is a 2.5-hour computer-based aptitude test required for undergraduate medicine entry at universities in Ireland, including Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. Many Irish medical schools exempt non-EU/international applicants from the Health Professions Admission Test (HPAT), so check the requirement for your target programme.

GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test)

GAMSAT is the entry test for graduate-entry medicine in Ireland, used by UCD, University of Limerick, University College Cork, and RCSI. The GAMSAT is conducted only twice a year, typically in March and September, with scores valid for 2 years.

• You are applying only to Ireland and want the widest acceptance: Take IELTS. Every university in Ireland accepts it, and a strong IELTS score also strengthens your student visa file, since the immigration threshold is lower than university admission requirements.
• You are applying to Ireland and the US or Canada in the same cycle: Take TOEFL. It is recognised across all three destinations, so you avoid taking two separate English tests for two applications.
• Your application deadline is close, and you need fast results: Take PTE Academic. Automated scoring means results typically arrive within 48 hours, compared with roughly two weeks for a paper-based IELTS result.
• You are budget-constrained, and your target university lists it: Take Duolingo. It costs a fraction of the other three English tests and can be completed from home. Confirm acceptance in writing with your specific programme first, especially at research-intensive universities.
• You are applying to an MBA at a business school that explicitly requires an admissions test: Take the GMAT Focus Edition, and only after confirming the requirement directly with that business school, since several Irish MBA programmes waive it for applicants with strong academic and professional profiles.
• You are applying to graduate-entry medicine with a completed bachelor's degree: Take GAMSAT, and register early, since the exam is held only twice a year and Ireland-track registration for the March sitting closes in late January.
