Overview

MS in Civil Engineering will be able to use basic engineering concepts flexibly in a variety of contexts. The students have the opportunity to also pursue one of the many engineering graduate certificate options in addition to or in combination with this program. There are five concentrations in this course:

  • Construction management
    This is intended for students interested in construction management and engineering or a closely related field.
  • Environmental and Water Systems
    Integrates the study of infrastructure; hydrology; hydraulics; numerical modeling; remote sensing; spatial and temporal data analysis; and physical, chemical, and biological processes that impact the water and air quality providing with the knowledge and tools for developing and managing sustainable, resilient water resources and infrastructure.
  • Geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering
    This includes study in the areas of soil mechanics/foundations and geoenvironmental engineering. It includes studies of soil and related earth materials for problems related to the protection of human health and the environment. Related areas include soil mechanics, fate/transport in subsurfaces, subsurface remediation, and others.
  • Structural engineering
    This is designed with career goals in structural engineering and structural design. The program includes courses in structural analysis and design, structural mechanics, dynamics of structures, earthquake engineering, wind engineering, and structural health monitoring.
  • Transportation engineering
    This program is designed for students with career goals in transportation engineering and
    transportation planning.

  • Geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering
    • core courses from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
    • electives in civil and environmental engineering, as well as electives from other departments such as mechanical and industrial engineering.
  • Structural engineering
    • core courses from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
    • electives in civil and environmental engineering, as well as electives from other departments such as mechanical and industrial engineering and mathematics.
  • Transportation engineering
    • core courses from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
    • electives in civil and environmental engineering and by related courses in applied
      mathematics, engineering, economics, policy, and management

  • Resume. The resume is submitted through the online application system.
  • GRE is required, except for applicants who have received or will receive a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program from a college or university that is located
    within the U.S. Institution code is 3665;
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores: minimum TOEFL score is 79 (internet-based), 550 (paper-based), and 21 3 (computer-based). The required minimum IELTS score is 6.5

experiential learning and is available on a competitive basis to selected students. Cooperative
Education at the graduate level is not just a way for students to gain real world experience, but is a way to challenge, network, expand and fine-tune their knowledge within their respective industry.

  • 4-6-8 month co-op placements aligning with academic semesters (graduate students
    complete two-year academic programs).
