Christopher Newport University is a public university located in Newport News, Virginia. It was founded in 1960 as Christopher Newport College, a two-year branch of the College of William & Mary. In 1977, the college gained independence and became a four-year university.
CNU has a total undergraduate enrollment of 4,472 students. The student body is diverse, with students from all over the United States and from over 50 countries.
The university offers over 50 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as a number of graduate programs. The academic programs are based on the liberal arts and sciences, and students are encouraged to participate in research and internships.
CNU is a member of the NCAA Division III and competes in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference. The university has 22 varsity sports teams, including men's and women's basketball, football, and lacrosse.
