SOP word count

How strict are universities about the word count? Lets say they have mentioned that SOP should be 500 words or less and my SOP is about 530-540 words. Is this looked as a bad sign? It's difficult to shorten my SOP further. Another optional section where they have given a chance to explain low GPA or unemployment gaps in less than 250 words. I managed to construct an answer but is about 265 words. Should I reduce my SOP and answer?
