What is FMGE Exam: Eligibility Criteria, Dates & Application Process

FMGE is a screening test, not a competitive exam. It does not rank candidates or compare them against each other. Its sole purpose is to verify that foreign medical graduates meet the minimum standard of clinical knowledge required for safe medical practice in India.

Passing FMGE is the legal prerequisite for obtaining registration with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council. Without it, a candidate cannot examine patients, issue prescriptions, perform clinical procedures, or apply for postgraduate medical education in India.

The exam is governed by the Screening Test Regulations 2002 and subsequent amendments issued by the NMC. All official communications, including the information bulletin, application schedule, admit card, and results, are published on the NBEMS portal at natboard.edu.in.

FMGE is compulsory for you if you meet all three of the following conditions:

• You are an Indian citizen or an OCI cardholder.
• You completed your primary medical qualification, MBBS or its equivalent, from a university outside India.
• Your foreign medical university is recognised by the NMC.

This requirement applies regardless of which country you studied in. While candidates from Ukraine, Russia, China, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Bangladesh, and Nepal make up the largest share of FMGE applicants, the exam is mandatory for graduates from any foreign country without exception.

Who is Exempted from FMGE?

A small group of candidates are exempt from FMGE. You do not need to appear for the exam if your primary medical degree is from any of the following countries:

• United States of America
• United Kingdom
• Canada
• Australia
• New Zealand

Graduates from these five countries are exempt because their medical education systems are considered equivalent to Indian standards by the NMC. However, this exemption applies only to the primary medical degree. If you completed your MBBS in India and pursued postgraduate training abroad, FMGE rules apply differently, and you should verify your specific situation with the NMC directly.

Foreign nationals who studied medicine abroad are also exempt. FMGE applies exclusively to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders.

FMGE is conducted twice a year by NBEMS, once in June and once in December. Since the exam is held only twice a year, missing an application window means waiting at least six months for the next attempt. All official notifications, including the information bulletin, application form, admit card, and results, are published on the NBEMS portal at natboard.edu.in.

FMGE June 2026 Session Dates

The June 2026 exam date is confirmed as June 28, 2026, as per the official NBEMS tentative examination calendar released on December 29, 2025.

All dates except the exam date are tentative and based on prior-year patterns. Candidates should check natboard.edu.in regularly for official announcements.

FMGE December 2026 Session Dates

The exam date for the December 2026 session has not been released as of April 2026. Based on prior-year patterns, the exam is typically held in the third week of December. Visit natboard.edu.in from October 2026 onwards for the official schedule and application window.

The FMGE June and December sessions differ mainly in pass rates, with December showing higher success rates of around 21% to 30% as more fresh graduates appear with longer prep time, while June (10% to 22%) sees more repeat candidates with shorter preparation.

The FMGE application fee must be paid online at the time of registration and is non-refundable under any circumstances, regardless of whether you appear for the exam, are declared ineligible, or choose to withdraw after submission.

For FMGE 2025 sessions, the fee was INR 6,195, comprising a base fee of INR 5,250 and INR 945 as GST.

A revision to INR 7,080 was reported for the December 2025 session.

Before applying for any 2026 session, check the official NBEMS information bulletin at natboard.edu.in to confirm the current applicable fee, as NBEMS revises it periodically.

Note: The fee is charged per attempt. There are no concessions, carry-forwards, or refunds for any reason.

For your FMGE application, submission of complete and correctly attested documents is critical. To avoid last-minute delays and rejection, you must gather all mandatory paperwork months in advance.

• Proof of Nationality: Your valid Indian Passport or your Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

• Internship Completion Proof: The Compulsory Rotating Internship Completion Certificate issued by your medical college or an institution approved by the Indian Embassy.

• Recent Photograph: A recent passport-sized colour photograph with a white background, as per the specifications in the official bulletin.
