US Visa Biometrics Documents: Checklist for Indian Students

Use this checklist before your US visa biometrics appointment to make sure you carry everything VAC officials need to verify your identity, retrieve your application details, and complete fingerprint and photograph collection without delays.

Missing any one of these three documents will result in the entry being denied at the VAC.

1. Valid Passport

Your passport is the primary identity document VAC officials use to verify your application.

• Carry your original passport in good physical condition with no torn pages or missing information.
• Your name, date of birth, and passport number must exactly match your DS-160 form. Any mismatch causes delays.
• Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended US stay.
• Carry older passports with previous US visas or travel history as backup for the interview stage.

2. DS-160 Confirmation Page

The DS-160 barcode is scanned by VAC officials to retrieve and link your visa application to your biometric data.

• Print the DS-160 confirmation page clearly. Blurry printouts or damaged barcodes cause delays.
• If you resubmitted your DS-160 after booking your appointment, update the new confirmation number in your appointment profile before your biometrics date. This mismatch is one of the most common causes of VAC delays.
• Do not rely on a digital copy. Print and carry it.

3. Biometrics Appointment Confirmation Letter

VAC officials check your appointment confirmation at the entrance before allowing entry.

• Print your VAC or OFC confirmation letter showing your appointment date, time, and center location.
• Arrive 15 minutes early to complete security checks without rushing.
• A digital copy on your phone may not be accepted at all centers.

Carry these as backup during biometrics. Some VAC centres cross-check student visa details at entry, and having these ready avoids delays.

1. Form I-20: Original copy signed by your DSO. Program start date, SEVIS ID, and personal details must match your DS-160. Carry the most recent version if your I-20 was updated after admission.
2. SEVIS Fee Receipt: USD 350 fee payment receipt from FMJfee.com. Confirm the SEVIS ID matches your I-20.
3. University Admission Letter: Official letter confirming your enrollment, program name, start date, and institution name.
4. Financial Documents: Bank statements, scholarship letters, loan sanction letters, or sponsor letters showing sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses.
5. Passport-Size Photograph: VAC officials capture your photograph digitally, but carry one or two printed photographs as backup.
6. US Visa Fee Payment Receipt (MRV): The MRV fee for F1 applicants is currently USD 185, approximately INR 17,700. Carry the printed receipt as proof of payment and confirm the reference number linked to your appointment is active before your date.

• Carrying only soft copies. VAC officials do not accept digital copies or screenshots.
• Mismatched details across your passport, DS-160, and appointment confirmation. Check all three the night before.
• Blurry or damaged DS-160 barcode. Check print quality before leaving home.
• Not updating the DS-160 number in your appointment portal after resubmission.
• Arriving late. A missed appointment requires rescheduling through the official portal.

Once your biometrics are collected, the VAC submits your fingerprints and photograph to the US Embassy, where they are matched against your DS-160 application records and used for background screening. You do not receive any decision or confirmation at this stage.

Here is what follows after your US biometrics appointment:

• Your biometric data is uploaded and linked to your visa application file at the US Embassy or Consulate.
• Attend your scheduled visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate on the date confirmed in your appointment letter.
• During the interview, the consular officer reviews your academic plans, finances, and travel intentions and may ask for the supporting documents you carried as backup during biometrics.
• After the interview, the officer will approve your visa, reject it, or place it under administrative processing for further review.
• If approved, the Embassy temporarily retains your passport for visa stamping and returns it via courier or your selected passport collection center.
• Once you receive your passport, verify your name spelling, passport number, visa category, and visa validity dates carefully before making any travel plans.
• Track your visa application and passport status through the official CEAC portal or the visa tracking link provided during your appointment booking.

During biometrics, you provide fingerprints and a photograph for identity verification. During the visa interview, a consular officer evaluates your eligibility, academic plans, financial background, and travel intentions.
