- Michael Jordan: Jordan is a retired professional basketball player widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He played for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards. Jordan attended NCCU from 1981 to 1983 before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- Madam C.J. Walker: Walker was an American entrepreneur who became America's first self-made female millionaire. She founded the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, which sold hair care products for African American women.
- Edwin G. Whitehead: Whitehead was a lawyer and politician who served as the 70th Governor of North Carolina from 1945 to 1949. He was the first African American to be elected governor of a U.S. state.
- Vivian Malone Jones: Jones was an American civil rights activist among the first African American students to enrol at the University of Alabama. She was met with resistance from segregationists, but she persisted and graduated from the university in 1965.
- G. K. Butterfield: Butterfield is an American politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 1st congressional district since 2013. He is the first African American to represent the district.
