Eric Bleumink retired from the University of Groningen as Chairman of the Executive Board on 24 May 2000.
During his career at the university, he also served as Rector Magnificus and a board member of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He was passionate about the university's social engagement at the regional, national, and global levels.
His pioneering role was particularly evident in promoting collaboration with international universities, which has since become an integral part of the University of Groningen's policy. The university's academic staff named the fellowship after Professor Bleumink to continue his contribution to the development of the University of Groningen.
