My Life as a Data Science Student in Germany
It's wild how different studying in Germany is from what I imagined. Writing this from my favorite spot in TU Munich's library, where I spend most of my time now (mostly because of the free coffee, let's be honest).
The biggest surprise? How hands-on everything is. Back in India, I was used to theoretical learning. Here, my first semester project involved working with a local startup on their actual data problems. Like, real-world messy data that doesn't come with textbook solutions!
The German education system took some getting used to. They're big on independent learning here. Professors give you a problem and expect you to figure out the approach yourself. My first presentation was terrifying - the professor kept asking "Why did you choose this method?" for every single decision. Now I actually love this approach.
Living costs in Munich were my biggest worry, but turns out there are ways to manage. Found a student job as a research assistant through the university job portal. Between that and my scholarship, I'm actually doing okay. Plus, student housing here is way cheaper than private apartments - thanks to the housing tips I got from seniors on Yocket!
The tech scene here is incredible. Munich has this huge data science community, and most events are free for students. Been to three AI conferences already, and even presented my project at one! The networking opportunities are endless if you're proactive.
Language-wise, it's a mix. My courses are in English, but knowing basic German helps a lot with daily life and making local friends. Those A1 classes I took before coming really paid off. Even ordered my first beer in German last week (proud moment)!
One year in, and I can say choosing Germany was right for me. The education quality is top-notch, living costs are manageable, and the work opportunities after graduation look promising. Plus, being in central Europe means weekend trips to different countries (when I'm not buried in python code, that is).
