This award has now closed for 2025/26.

All award holders are expected to be energetic members of postgraduate community, and will engage with opportunities to present their work to the wider student and staff body during the period covered by their award.  University offer  postgraduates a range of training and development opportunities appropriate to their programme of study.

William Hunter Sharpe Memorial Award Coverage

University is offering one award, for the sum of £2,400.  This award will be tenable for one academic year and will be deducted from your tuition fee. 

William Hunter Sharpe Memorial Award Eligibility Criteria

The award will be available to new applicants who have applied for admission to the Masters Creative Writing degree programme of study at the University commencing in September 2025.

Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, the equivalent of a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree at undergraduate level.

Applications will be considered from UK/Overseas applicants wishing to study full-time/part-time programmes.

How to Apply for William Hunter Sharpe Memorial Award

The award deadline is the 5th May 2025.  Applicants who have an active application to the programme will be contacted after that date regarding the award application process.

Portfolio: You should supply a portfolio of writing.

  • For poetry, this should be six (6) pages of poetry, starting a new page for each new poem of 14 lines or over.
  • For fiction, this should be a complete story or stories, or an equivalent amount from a longer work (between 2,500 and 3,500 words).
    • These are firm limits.
    • If you are undecided about whether to apply for fiction or poetry, you should send a sample of both, i.e. six (6) pages of poetry and 2,500-3,500 words of fiction (if offered a place it will be for one or the other).
    • Work in other forms (for example journalism, life writing or advertising) will not be considered.

Personal statement: When writing your personal statement, consider the following questions:

  • What do you most hope to learn/gain from a Creative Writing degree, and why is this programme for you?
  • Tell university about your writing: what are you interested in and why? Are there aspects of your current practice you're particularly proud of? Things you know you need to work on?
  • What (if any) prior experience do you have of studying Creative Writing?
  • Guidance on the application process and supporting documents
    • You will need to submit a personal statement of around 500 words, outlining your academic history and relevant experience.

All supporting documents, including references, must be uploaded to the online application system by the deadline date.

Reference requirements vary between degree programmes: some programmes do not ask for any references, while others require either one or two references.
