Harvey Mudd College (HMC), a private liberal arts institution in Claremont, California, specialises in science and engineering. As part of the Claremont Colleges, it shares campus grounds and resources with the other institutions. In 2021, the college had an enrollment of 902 undergraduate students and granted Bachelor of Science degrees. Admission to HMC is highly selective, contributing to its academically rigorous environment.
The college was established with financial support from the friends and family of Harvey Seeley Mudd, an early investor in the Cyprus Mines Corporation. Although Mudd played a role in planning the college, he passed away before its opening in 1955. The campus, designed by Edward Durell Stone, features a modernist brutalist architectural style.
Campus
The original campus buildings, designed by Edward Durell Stone and completed in 1959, are characterised by distinctive "knobbly concrete squares" that Harvey Mudd students have affectionately nicknamed "warts." These textured surfaces even serve as convenient hooks for skateboards. The school's unofficial mascot, "Wally the Wart," is a personified version of these concrete warts.
In 2013, Travel and Leisure named the college one of "America's ugliest college campuses." While Stone considered his design a "Modernist masterpiece," the magazine criticised it for combining dull, slab-like buildings with Beaux-Arts decorative elements, resulting in an uninspiring aesthetic.
