To get a Switzerland student visa, you must submit a complete set of documents that prove your admission, finances, insurance, and identity.
The checklist below covers the key requirements to get a Switzerland visa for Indian students.
Academic and Admission Documents
You must submit documents that confirm your admission to a Swiss institution and explain your academic background.
- Acceptance letter: Submit an official acceptance or registration letter from a recognised Swiss university, college, or school. If you have already paid your tuition fees, include proof of payment and the matching bank statement.
- Academic certificates: Submit the originals and two colour copies of your 10th, 12th, and degree certificates. The embassy does not accept documents stamped ‘TRUE COPY’ or ‘NOTARY’, so submit clean documents without these stamps.
- Curriculum vitae: Provide an original CV and one copy covering your complete academic and work history.
- Motivation letter: Submit a signed and dated cover letter explaining why you chose to study in Switzerland, your future career plans, and your commitment to leave Switzerland after completing your studies.
Financial Proof
You must show that you have enough money to support yourself during your studies and explain the source of your funds.
- Proof of funds: Show roughly CHF 21,000 / INR 24.6 L per year to cover your living costs. Submit one original document along with two copies.
- Sponsor letter: If someone else is funding your studies, submit a signed letter confirming that they will cover your costs. Also include a copy of the sponsor’s passport showing the first and last pages.
- Source of funds: Clearly explain where the money comes from, such as a bank loan, family savings, or salary. Also state your relationship with the sponsor.
- Income and bank proof: Submit the sponsor’s ITR-V for the last two assessment years and bank statements for the last three months. The bank statements should be stamped and signed by the bank.
Health Insurance and Accommodation Proof
You must show that you have health insurance and suitable accommodation arranged for your stay in Switzerland.
- Health insurance: Hold a valid health insurance policy that includes accident cover and remains active for the full duration of your stay. The policy should usually provide minimum coverage of CHF 30,000 / INR 35.2L.
- Accommodation proof: Provide proof of where you will live in Switzerland, such as a rental agreement or a university housing confirmation letter.
Language Proficiency and Identity Documents
Your visa application must also include proof of language proficiency and valid identity documents.
- English proficiency: An IELTS or TOEFL certificate is mandatory for the visa application. The embassy treats this as a compulsory requirement rather than an optional document.
- Other languages: If your course is taught in German, French, or Italian, include the relevant language certificate. You can also submit these certificates if you already hold them.
- Valid passport: Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, remain valid for at least 3 months after your return, and have at least two blank pages.
- Passport photos: Submit four recent photographs with a white background. The photographs must be no older than 6 months and should measure 35 to 40 mm in width.
- Application forms: Submit three completed and signed visa application forms. Also provide photocopies of your passport bio page and last page, along with copies of any valid UK, USA, or Canada visas.
Cantonal Registration After Arrival
You must register with the relevant cantonal migration office after arriving in Switzerland and complete the residence permit process.
- Register within 14 days: Register with your local cantonal migration office within 14 days of arriving in Switzerland.
- Documents to carry: Take your passport, university enrolment proof, evidence of sufficient funds, proof of your local address, and two passport photos.
- Residence Permit B: After registration, the canton issues your biometric Residence Permit B, which becomes your official residence document for the rest of your course.
