More rankings for this university

Bowdoin College, a private liberal arts institution located in Brunswick, Maine, was chartered in 1794 when Maine was still part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The college offers a wide array of academic programs, including 35 majors and 40 minors, along with joint engineering programs in partnership with Columbia University, Caltech, Dartmouth College, and the University of Maine.

A founding member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference, Bowdoin is also part of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium, an athletic and interlibrary exchange program with Bates College and Colby College. Bowdoin boasts over 30 varsity teams, with the polar bear as its mascot, a tribute to alumnus Robert Peary, who led the first successful expedition to the North Pole in 1913. Additionally, from 1821 to 1921, Bowdoin operated the Medical School of Maine.

Student’s Life

Bowdoin College's dining services have earned national recognition, securing the No. 1 spot in the Princeton Review rankings for colleges and universities multiple times, including in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The New York Times once remarked on the high quality of the dining experience, stating that "if it weren't for the trays, and for the fact that most diners are under 25, you'd think it was a restaurant." Bowdoin incorporates produce from its own organic garden into meals served at its two main dining halls, and each academic year kicks off with a traditional lobster bake outside Farley Fieldhouse.

In a 2005 interview, Professor Richard E. Morgan, a member of the Class of 1959, reflected on student life at the then all-male Bowdoin. He described the atmosphere as "monastic," noting that students had few recreational options, stating that "the only things to do were either work or drink.”
