The application process is completed online through the official FNF portal. It is competitive and involves multiple stages of assessment. You must follow each step carefully.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before you begin, carefully review the eligibility criteria on the official FNF website. Ensure you meet the requirements for nationality, academic level, remaining semesters, and German language proficiency.
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
Gather and scan all the required documents, ensuring they are translated into German or English. Secure your two referees and inform them they will receive an upload link via email.
Step 3: Complete the Online Application
Fill out the detailed online application form on the FNF portal before the deadline. This includes providing personal, academic, and motivational information.
Step 4: Submit and Await Initial Assessment
After submitting your application, it will be evaluated by the foundation's selection committee. This assessment determines if you progress to the interview shortlist.
Step 5: Receive an Interview Invitation
If shortlisted, you will receive an invitation to a selection interview. These interviews are typically conducted in person at a German embassy or online.
Step 6: Attend Your Interview
Prepare for and attend your interview with the FNF selection panel. This is your opportunity to discuss your application, your academic goals, and your alignment with liberal values—all in German.
Step 7: Await the Final Decision
After the interview, the selection committee makes its final decision. Successful candidates will be notified via email or through the application portal.
Step 8: Receive Your Award
If successful, you will receive your official award letter and can begin the formalities of enrolling at your German university and organizing your move.
Please note: The application deadlines are typically April 30th and October 31st each year for funding starting the following semester.

You will be notified of your interview date and time via email. The interview panel will assess your personality, motivation, academic goals, and, most importantly, your affinity for and understanding of liberal principles. You must have all your original documents and certificates ready for verification if requested.
