The University of New Orleans is a public research university in New Orleans, Louisiana. Established in 1958 as Louisiana State University in New Orleans, it is the largest public university and one of two doctoral research institutions in the Greater New Orleans area. UNO is part of the University of Louisiana System and is classified as an "R2: Doctoral University – High Research Activity." The university comprises eight schools and colleges, offering 40 bachelor's, 45 master's, and 17 doctoral degrees. Notable academic programs include the only civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering degrees in New Orleans, the only graduate program in hospitality and tourism, and the state's PAB-accredited urban planning program. UNO also has one of the few naval architecture and engineering programs in the U.S. Its athletic teams, known as the Privateers, compete in 14 sports as part of the NCAA Division I Southland Conference.
