The University of Regensburg is a public research institution located in Regensburg, Germany. Established on 18 July 1962 by the Landtag of Bavaria, it became the fourth full-fledged university in the region. Construction began in 1965, and the university officially welcomed its first students in the winter semester of 1967–1968, initially offering programs in Law, Business Sciences, and Philosophy. The Faculty of Theology was added during the summer semester of 1968. Today, the University of Regensburg is home to eleven faculties.
The university is an active participant in the European Union's SOCRATES programme and a member of the Compostela Group. One of its most notable academics, former Pope Benedict XVI, served as a professor there until 1977, formally retaining his chair in theology even after his departure.
