The university spans approximately 90,000 square metres and is situated on the Gießberg within the Mainauwald (Mainau forest). It is part of the Egg district in Konstanz, with the old village of Egg located about 200 metres from the campus, across Mainaustrasse (Mainau street). Two pedestrian and bicycle bridges link the university grounds to the village and the lakeside. Like the village, the university's sports grounds are situated on the lakeside, north of Egg. To the northwest of the north parking lot, the university’s botanical garden is open to visitors on weekdays. Historically, the land now occupied by the university belonged to the former independent village of Allmannsdorf, which was merged with the city of Konstanz on 1 January 1915.

Architect Horst Linde designed the university as a cohesive space to foster social interaction among researchers, teachers, and students, breaking away from traditional university layouts. Instead of a dispersed array of individual buildings, Linde envisioned a compact complex of interlinked structures, adapted to the hillside terrain much like a mountain village. This approach encouraged greater connection between the various academic and social spaces.
