The University of Detroit Mercy traces its roots back to 1877 when Detroit College was founded near downtown Detroit by the Society of Jesus, led by John Baptist Miège, S.J. In 1911, Detroit College was renamed the University of Detroit, marking the beginning of its evolution into a prominent institution. By 1927, under the leadership of University President John P. McNichols, a second campus was established, celebrated for its Spanish-inspired architecture and picturesque elm-lined pathways.
Meanwhile, in 1941, the Sisters of Mercy founded Mercy College of Detroit, which quickly flourished as an independent institution. Over the years, both schools cultivated distinguished alumni and achieved significant academic and community success before ultimately merging to form the University of Detroit Mercy.
