Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Karlsruhe - HKA) is the second-largest university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg, with approximately 7,000 students enrolled as of the winter semester 2022/2023. As a founding member of the Doctoral Association of Universities of Applied Sciences Baden-Württemberg, established in 2022, HKA is also part of the INGENIUM European University network.
The university offers a range of study programs in engineering, computer science, and business management, leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Students can obtain their Bachelor's degree after a standard study period of seven semesters, while a Master's degree can be earned after an additional three semesters. These degrees were introduced at HKA in 1999 as part of the Bologna reform. The curricula include laboratory exercises, practical semesters, and final theses, which are typically conducted in collaboration with industry. Since 2000, research activities have been increasingly integrated into several degree courses, with some programs being considered research-oriented.
International Contacts
The university collaborates with approximately 180 partner institutions worldwide, with international contacts managed centrally by the university’s International Office. Students have the opportunity to study abroad through various exchange programs. These partnerships also facilitate the planning and execution of international research projects, and guest lecturers are regularly invited to give presentations.
The Bachelor's program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, as well as the Master's programs in Sensor Systems Technology and the Tricontinental Master in Global Studies, are conducted entirely in English. The Master's program in Geomatics is primarily taught in English. Additionally, in collaboration with partner universities in France and Switzerland, a trinational Bachelor's and Master's degree course in Civil Engineering is offered, allowing students to obtain degrees from a French and a Swiss university alongside a German one.
