Transportation in the city

Hong Kong provides one of the world’s most efficient public transportation systems:

MTR (Mass Transit Railway): The MTR is Hong Kong’s highly efficient and reliable subway system, with trains running at frequent intervals across the city. CUHK is directly served by the University Station on the East Rail Line, which connects the campus to key business districts like Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Kowloon Tong in under 30 minutes. Students can purchase Octopus cards, a rechargeable smart card, for easy access to trains and other public transport.

CUHK Shuttle Buses: CUHK offers a well-organized internal shuttle bus service that operates across its large, hilly campus. These free buses are exclusive to students and staff, running from early morning until late evening. They connect major buildings, student hostels, libraries, and the MTR station, making it easy to navigate the sprawling campus efficiently.

Taxis, Minibuses, and Buses: For off-campus travel, students can use Hong Kong’s extensive bus network, red and green minibuses, and a large fleet of taxis. All are integrated with MTR stations, providing multi-modal connectivity. Buses and minibuses cover routes not served by the MTR and are a convenient option for reaching nearby neighbourhoods or late-night travel. Taxis are also easily available and affordable compared to other global cities.

Biking and Walking: CUHK’s campus is pedestrian-friendly, with well-maintained walkways, escalators on steeper paths, and scenic trails. Although the campus is on a slope, the university provides bike-friendly zones, and students who prefer cycling can park their bikes in designated areas. Walking is also a popular way to commute within the campus, with lush greenery and views of Tolo Harbour making for an enjoyable experience.
