Overview

The graduate program in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering is known worldwide for developing students into leaders in engineering practice, research, and education. We welcome applications from highly qualified and motivated students for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

The complex problems surrounding the nexus of cities, water and energy demand that engineers have increased breadth and depth of knowledge. CAEE strives to provide students with the educational background and teamwork needed to innovate future solutions, technologies, and sustainable systems. We are dedicated to creative, comprehensive teaching and research that ranges from fundamental to applied.

Our many research centers provide graduate students with the opportunity to explore their areas of interest and to be a part of a supportive, intellectually stimulating community. With state-of-the-art facilities, the CAEE graduate program is designed to educate engineers who will be at the forefront of the profession in industry, academia, civil service, and beyond.

Applicants are expected to have an undergraduate degree in engineering. However, exceptional candidates with other undergraduate degrees can be considered for admission, but will be required to complete additional undergraduate leveling courses prior to beginning graduate work. The typical leveling courses required will depend on the student's background.

The department offers the Master of Science in Engineering degree in Civil Engineering and Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered only in Civil Engineering. Applicants interested in graduate studies in Architectural Engineering should apply to Civil Engineering.

Within the CAEE graduate program, students are asked to choose from one of our areas of study:

  • Building Energy and Environments
  • Construction Engineering and Project Management
  • Environmental and Water Resources Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Infrastructure Materials Engineering
  • Mechanics, Uncertainty and Simulation in Engineering
  • Ocean Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Sustainable Systems
  • Transportation Engineering

In addition to these programs, the department offers a dual degree program with the LBJ School of Public Affairs
(MSE/MPA).

Course Requirement: A Bachelor of Science degree from a program in engineering accredited by ABET is the general prerequisite for admission to a graduate program in civil engineering. An applicant whose training does not meet this prerequisite may be accepted but will be required to pass a sequence of courses stipulated by the Graduate Studies Committee that will make up the deficiencies in undergraduate preparation. A list of the required courses is available from the graduate adviser.
