The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), known as Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in Galicia and Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in Spanish, is a public institution situated in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. It also has a second campus located in Lugo, Galicia. As one of the oldest universities in the world still in continuous operation, it has a long and distinguished history.
The origins of the university date back to 1495, when a school was established in Santiago. Although Pope Julius II approved the creation of the university in 1504, it wasn't until 1526 that Pope Clement VII officially granted the bull for its establishment. In 1555, thanks to the efforts of Cardinal Juan Álvarez de Toledo, the university began expanding beyond religious studies, developing academic programs in emerging scientific fields.
