Stockton University, a public institution in Galloway Township, New Jersey, is part of the state’s public higher education system. Named after Richard Stockton, a New Jersey signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the university was founded in 1969 and welcomed its first class in 1971. Initially, classes were conducted at the Mayflower Hotel in Atlantic City until the main campus in Galloway Township became operational later that year. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Stockton University now serves nearly 10,000 students and also operates a second campus in Atlantic City.
In November 1968, New Jersey voters approved a $202.5 million capital construction bond issue, which allocated $15 million specifically for a new state college in Southern New Jersey. By 1969, a 1,600-acre (650-hectare) site in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, located in Galloway Township, was chosen for the development of Stockton’s primary campus. Adjusted for inflation, these amounts would equate to approximately $1.77 billion and $131.43 million in 2023, respectively.
Campus
During the 2010s, the university undertook several major building projects and initiatives. One of the highlights was the opening of the new Campus Center on May 7, 2011, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Spanning 154,000 square feet (14,300 square meters), the building was designed to be green and sustainable. It serves as a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming hub for the entire community.
In September 2013, Stockton expanded its School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NAMS) by unveiling the $39.5 million Unified Science Center. The state-of-the-art, three-story facility spans 66,350 square feet (6,164 square meters) and features cutting-edge equipment. Stockton's NAMS graduates account for over 20 percent of math and science degree recipients from New Jersey's public colleges and universities.
