Founded in 1893, Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU or Southern) is one of the four premier institutes in the state of Connecticut. An incredible institution, it has the third-oldest campus in the System, i.e., the Connecticut State University System.
Originally a teacher’s college, The University also has a center for teacher education. As a university, it still continues to produce teachers, principals a well as school superintendents than any other institution in all of Connecticut. The university also received an approval for its first Ed.D program in Educational Leadership. This is a degree in a doctoral program and is really prestigious.

The University is located in the neighborhood of West Rock, in New Haven, Connecticut. As far as locations go, New Haven is a pretty ideal place for collegiate education. City-like but not strictly in the city, here, the young adults can get the feel of the busy city life, without the actual pressure of living in a city. This place strikes the perfect balance of a serene neighborhood for an education and the exposure to real adult life in a metropolis.


With one campus in the area of New Haven itself, on the borders of Hamden, in Connecticut, there is only one street separating the academic part of the campus from the residential part. This is known as Fitch Street.
There is a big gate known as the Founders Gate. This is located between the Engleman Hall and Lyman Center. It is also a link to the early SCSU campus on Howe Street. Recently, the campus has expanded, and a new Academic building for science and research has been added, in addition to the parking area to incorporate more student cars near Jennings Hall.
The academic sector houses many classrooms and offices to be a perfect platform for the kind of academic excellence that the university stresses.

Residing Options

The University provides sufficient housing opportunities for students in the form of halls of residences. Freshmen and sophomore students are usually accommodated in halls named - Neff, Wilkinson, Hickerson, Chase and in the West Campus Residence Complex .
While the upperclassmen are usually accommodated in Brownell Hall which is a combination of a residence and upperclassmen style of accommodation, Townships and North Campus Midrise Complex which is reserved for seniors as well as graduate students with more than 100 credits along with the Schwartz Hall offering a diverse range of apartments for two to as many as six persons for junior and sophomore students.
The campus also houses a Student Center, an excellent food service at the Connecticut Hall, a Student Health Center which also works as the center for campus police. The Moore Fieldhouse and the Jess Dow are fields there for students with athletic interests.
Besides providing hall of residences, the University also provides reasonably good off-campus apartments for students as well. Some of the popular housing choices offered by the university are New Haven Towers, 278 Main, Aspen Glen, Hemden Center, 1111 Stratford, Diamond Ridge, Westville Village Apartments, Brendan Towers, Mayfair Courts Apartments, 200 Fountain, The Novella, West Gate Town Homes etc. The average pricing of these apartments is $1200.


The faculty at This University is truly excellent. The student-faculty ratio is pretty small. This is really good from the student’s perspective because they get better attention from the professors and the queries (if any) are better solved and this constitutes a crucial factor which students look out while choosing the university from which they want to pursue their higher studies.
All the faculty members at the This University are well qualified and informed which they pass on to the students as well. It is for this that some of the professors and faculty members of this university have received wide recognition for their work. For eg, Professor Jahana Hayes who studies in the department of History has been awarded with the 2016 National teacher of the Year for which she is going to be felicitated by U.S. President Barack Obama.

Being one of the most influential universities in Connecticut, students are often considered by the top tier firms in an around New Haven. Students who graduate after four years usually go on to work with some firms before pursuing further education.
