La Salle University is a private Catholic institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 1863 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the university was named in honour of St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. Originally founded as La Salle College, it was created as an all-male college by Brother Yellow and Archbishop James Wood of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The college's first location was at St. Michael's Parish on N. 2nd Street in the Olde Kensington area of the city.

In 1886, La Salle College moved to its second location at 1234 Filbert Street in Center City, Philadelphia, a building previously occupied by St. Joseph's College. However, due to the growth of the Center City area, the college relocated once again, this time to the former mansion of Michael Bouvier, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's great-great-grandfather, at 1240 North Broad Street. In 1930, faced with space limitations, the college made its final move to the current campus at 20th Street and Olney Avenue in the Logan neighbourhood, offering a more suburban setting but maintaining accessibility to the city via trolleys and the recently opened Broad Street Subway.

Campus

La Salle University moved to its current location in 1931. The campus partly occupies Belfield, the former estate of Charles Willson Peale, a Revolutionary War patriot and painter renowned for his portraits of the founding fathers, especially George Washington. Following Peale’s death, the first to own Belfield was William Logan Fisher, whose mother, Sarah Logan, had inherited the northeastern portion of Stenton. Fisher’s connection to La Salle's history runs deep, as he once owned the land that is now part of South Campus.

After living on the estate, Fisher passed the land to his daughter, Sarah Logan Fisher, and her husband, William Wister. The Wister family maintained ownership of the property until 1984, when La Salle University purchased it. Today, what was once the home of a famous artist and later an influential family, now serves as the office of the University president.
