It ranks as the fourth largest university in Mississippi by student enrollment and is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The university's athletic teams, known as the Tigers, compete in NCAA Division I athletics as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Campus
The main campus spans 245 acres (0.99 km²) and is home to over 50 academic and administrative buildings. It is situated at 1400 John R. Lynch Street, nestled between Prentiss and Dalton Streets. Ayer Hall, built in 1903, is the oldest building on the main campus and was named after the institution’s first president, Charles Ayer. In recognition of its historical significance, Ayer Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The Gibbs-Green Pedestrian Walkway honors the memory of two young men who tragically lost their lives in the Jackson State shooting of 1970.
As part of the landmark "Ayers Settlement" in 2002, the university, along with the state's other two public HBCUs, has undergone significant renovations and campus upgrades. In addition to the main campus, Jackson State University operates satellite campuses throughout the Jackson Metropolitan area, including the Universities Center on Ridgewood Road, the Jackson Medical Mall on Woodrow Wilson, the Mississippi E-Center, and the Downtown campus at 100 Capitol Street.

Jackson State University Global Ranking
The University is still awaiting its official rankings from prominent organisations such as QS, Times Higher Education, and US News and World Report. Despite its growing reputation and contributions to academia, the university has not yet been featured in the rankings published by these influential bodies. But it has been ranked at #392-434 among the best colleges for national universities and #21 in historically black colleges and universities by U.S. News & World Report for 2025.
Although the University continues to develop its academic programs and research initiatives, it remains unranked by these major international ranking institutions.
