Friedrich Schiller University Jena is a public research institution located in Jena, Thuringia, Germany. Founded in 1558, it is one of the ten oldest universities in Germany. The university is associated with six Nobel Prize winners, the most recent being Herbert Kroemer, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000. The university was renamed after the poet Friedrich Schiller, who served as a professor of philosophy there. During Schiller’s time, the university became a hub for influential thinkers at the turn of the 19th century.
The university attracted some of the leading figures of German idealism and early Romanticism, including Karl Leonhard Reinhold, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, G. W. F. Hegel, F. W. J. Schelling, and Friedrich Schlegel. As of 2014, around 19,000 students were enrolled at the university, which also has a faculty of 375 professors. Since 2014, Walter Rosenthal has served as the university's president.
