International students can study in Ireland without IELTS by submitting a TOEFL, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, or Cambridge English score that meets the course requirements. Depending on the university, some students may also qualify with an MOI certificate confirming that the previous degree was taught and assessed in English or by completing a pre-sessional English course before starting the programme.
For example, Trinity College Dublin may issue a conditional offer to students who meet all eligibility criteria except the English language requirement. The offer can specify a minimum score in an approved alternative English test or require students to complete Trinity’s pre-sessional English programme.
1. Alternative English Proficiency Tests
Almost every university in Ireland accepts standardised English language tests like TOEFL iBT, PTE, Duolingo, and Cambridge English tests as alternatives to IELTS. Check the specific course page before booking a test, as some departments may set higher requirements than the university-wide minimum.
Here is a quick overview of the commonly accepted English language tests and their typical score requirements for studying in Ireland:

2. Medium of Instruction (MOI) Certificate
An MOI certificate is an official letter from a student's previous school or university confirming that their degree was delivered and examined entirely in English. Some Irish universities accept it instead of a test, but several exclude India from their approved country lists, so Indian applicants often still need a test score. Check each university's list before you request the letter.
For example, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) allows students to qualify for an English language exemption if they have completed at least three cumulative years of full-time study in English, regardless of their country of study. So Indian students who completed their entire undergraduate degree, including examinations, in English can study in RCSI with an MOI certificate.
Please keep in mind that a university exemption does not replace the visa requirement. You will generally still need a recognised English test score for your Ireland student visa.
3. Complete a Pre-Sessional English Course
A pre-sessional course is useful for applicants who have an offer but fall slightly short of the required English score. You complete the course before your degree begins, and meeting its requirements can fulfil the university’s English language condition.
For example, Trinity College Dublin offers a 10-week summer Pre-Sessional Programme through its Centre for English Language Learning and Teaching (CELLT). For standard-entry courses, eligible applicants can enter with a TOEFL iBT score of 72 (with no skill below 17), IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 105. Students who successfully complete the programme do not need to take another external English test.
Editor’s Insight: A pre-sessional English course is an ideal route if you narrowly miss the IELTS requirement but otherwise meet the university’s admission criteria. Instead of retaking IELTS, use the pre-sessional English course to fulfil the university’s language requirement before starting your degree.
