Yokohama City University (YCU) is a public university located in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 2013, YCU comprises two faculties and serves approximately 4,850 students, including 111 international students. The university operates across four campuses: Kanazawa-Hakkei, Fukuura, Maioka, and Tsurumi, as well as two hospitals—YCU Hospital and YCU Medical Center. YCU is a member of the Port-City University League (PUL) and a core member of the Japanese University Network in the Bay Area (JUNBA).
In 2017, it was ranked 16th among the "world's best small universities" (Times Higher Education) and placed 23rd among life sciences institutes in Japan (Nature Index 2016). The roots of YCU trace back to the Yokohama School of Commerce, which was established in 1882 by a local merchants' association. The school underwent a name change in 1888 to become the Yokohama Commercial School which functioned as a five-year institution for boys aged 14 to 19 and older.
