The University of the Cumberlands, a private Christian institution in Williamsburg, Kentucky, enrols over 20,000 students. Founded on January 7, 1889, the university was initially called Williamsburg Institute. In 1887, representatives from 18 Baptist churches in eastern Kentucky met at the annual Mount Zion Association meeting to discuss establishing a higher education institution for the region's mountain communities. 

The Kentucky state legislature formally incorporated the college on April 6, 1888. In 1907, the school acquired the three buildings of Highland College, and in 1913, Williamsburg Institute changed its name to Cumberland College, reflecting its location near the Cumberland River, Cumberland Falls, and Cumberland Gap.
