About

The University of Porto (Universidade do Porto) is a public university in Porto, Portugal, that was founded on March 22, 1911. After the University of Lisbon, it is the second largest Portuguese university in terms of registered students, and it produces some of the most well-known research in the country.

Approximately 28,000 students (11,000 postgraduates) are currently enrolled in the fifteen schools of the University of Porto (13 faculties, a biomedical sciences institute and a business school, each one with a considerable degree of autonomy). Faculty of Economics (FEP), Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), Faculty of Fine Arts (FBAUP), and Faculty of Architecture (FAUP) are among the 15 faculties that make up the University of Porto.

Transportation in the city

The University of Porto does not offer its own transportation services. 

However, public transit services, taxis, buses and trains are the best possible means to reach the university.


Services offered by the university

  • The University's structures - faculties, research and development centers, student housing, and sports facilities – are divided into three main locations (known as 'poles').
  • Pole 1 is located in the city center, where the neoclassical architecture of architect Carlos Amarante commemorates the University's founding; Pole 2 (Asprela) is a campus in Porto's northern end; and Pole 3 (Campo Alegre) is located in the western part of the city, near Pole 1.
  • Other institutes and facilities can be found around the city and even outside its borders.

Student life

  • Students at the University of Porto organize a variety of extracurricular activities. In sports, these activities include those promoted by G.A.D.U.P. and C.D.U.P. In terms of culture, the University recognises Orfeo Universitário do Porto (choir, dance, and music), Teatro Universitário do Porto (theater), NEFUP (folklore), SDdUP (debates), CLUP (faculty of letters choir), and AAOUP (former Orfeo members) as cultural extension groups.
  • The Latada to the Queima das Fitas are only a few of the important events that take place during the academic year. This last event is co-organized by FAP – Federação Académica do Porto – and is regarded as Porto's largest student festival.

On campus accomodation

  • Students from all over the country and the world can stay in one of nine halls of residence run by U.Porto Social Services (SASUP).
  • The U.Porto Halls of Residence are primarily for undergraduate, master's, and integrated master's degree students who must live away from home for financial or geographical reasons and require housing to continue their academic pursuits. SASUP scholarship students are given priority. Those who are studying away from home will receive a boost to their scholarship to help pay for their living expenses.

Porto's global offering of 63 graduate degree courses, over 160 master's degree courses, several doctoral degree courses, and various specialist courses.
