The University of Palermo is a public research university located in Palermo, Italy. Established in 1806, it currently comprises 12 faculties. Its origins, however, trace back to 1498 when subjects such as medicine and law were first taught. In the latter half of the 16th century, the Jesuit Fathers began conferring degrees in Theology and Philosophy from their location at the Collegio Massimo al Cassero, where they had honed their expertise for over two centuries.
In 1767, Ferdinand I expelled the Jesuits from the kingdom, but they returned 37 years later to reclaim their position. By that time, their previous seat had been transformed into the Regia Accademia. This long history of academic tradition has shaped the university into a significant educational institution in Italy.
