The institution traces its origins back to 1887 when John Tarleton College was founded with a significant endowment from settler John Tarleton. Upon his passing on September 11, 1895, Tarleton allocated a portion of his estate—primarily property—to establish, support, and sustain the college. Texas Governor Charles Allen Culberson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction James McCoy Carlisle, and Erath County Judge Thomas B. King were appointed as trustees to oversee this endeavor.
