Stockholm University is a public research institution located in Stockholm, Sweden. Established as a college in 1878, it attained university status in 1960. With over 33,000 students across its four faculties—law, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences—it is one of the largest universities in Scandinavia.

Campus
The main campus of Stockholm University is located in the Frescati area, which stretches from the Bergius Botanical Garden in the north to Sveaplan in the south. Situated in the world’s first national urban park, Frescati is known for its blend of natural beauty, distinctive architecture, and modern art. Among its notable buildings is the Aula Magna, a prominent auditorium. The area encompasses several subregions, including Albano, Bergius Botanic Garden, Frescati Backe, Frescati Hage, Kräftriket, Lilla Frescati, and Sveaplan, all within Frescati.
Many of these place names date back to the late 1700s. After King Gustav III’s trip to Italy in 1783–84, several areas around Brunnsviken were given Italian names. In addition to Frescati, Stockholm University also has a campus in Kista, which is home to the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences.
