Southeastern University was established in 1935 in New Brockton, Alabama, by J.C. Thames, the Assemblies of God Alabama District superintendent, alongside other Southeastern district leaders. Initially named the Alabama Shield of Faith Institute, the institution was housed in a former high school building and welcomed its first students on November 4, 1935. With a team of four faculty members, it began offering a two-year academic program to its inaugural class.
In 1936, the institute was renamed South-Eastern Bible Institute (SEBI). The first graduation ceremony took place in May 1937, marking a milestone as 17 students received diplomas. This event highlighted the institution's commitment to education and its growing significance within the Assemblies of God community.

But it has been ranked at #392-434 in National University by U.S. News in 2024.
Although the University continues to develop its academic programs and research initiatives, it remains unranked by these major international ranking institutions. The absence of a ranking from QS, Times Higher Education, and US News does not reflect the quality of education or research output but simply indicates that the university has not been formally assessed by these specific agencies.
