Marymount University, located in Arlington County, Virginia, is a private Catholic institution. It was established in 1950 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) as Marymount College, originally a two-year women's school. The university's campus is situated on the former estate of Admiral Presley Marion Rixey, the Naval Surgeon General and personal physician to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley. Marymount College was part of a network of Marymount schools operated by the RSHM in New York, California, and other states.
