History
In the 1880s, entrepreneur Alexander Arthur (1846–1912) and several partners established a company called the American Association, Ltd., aiming primarily to develop the rich iron ore and coal deposits in the Cumberland Gap area. Arthur founded Middlesboro, Kentucky, intending it to be a hub for the company’s employees and for its iron furnaces. To support the city’s growth, he constructed a railroad line connecting Middlesboro to Knoxville, Tennessee. Arthur envisioned Middlesboro blossoming into a major industrial centre, a "Pittsburgh of the South." In 1888, he also founded the nearby city of Harrogate, hoping it would one day become a prestigious suburb for Middlesboro's elite residents.
The American Association invested approximately two million dollars in developing Harrogate, with its crowning achievement being the Four Seasons Hotel, a 700-room structure believed to be one of the largest hotels in the United States at the time. The hotel boasted a grand dining hall, a casino, and a separate sanitarium. However, the economic panic of the early 1890s, combined with the collapse of Arthur's London-based financial backers, ultimately doomed the American Association. The Four Seasons Hotel was eventually sold and dismantled, marking the end of Arthur’s ambitious vision for the region.
