Fairfield University is a private Jesuit institution located in Fairfield, Connecticut. Established by the Jesuits in 1942, it serves around 5,000 full-time undergraduate students and approximately 1,200 graduate students, including both full-time and part-time enrollees as of 2023. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees through its five schools and colleges.
The university’s roots trace back to 1941, when James H. Dolan, Provincial of the New England Province of the Society of Jesus, received permission from Bishop Maurice F. McAuliffe of the Hartford Archdiocese to establish a Jesuit high school and college in southwestern Connecticut. In 1942, the Jesuits officially founded Fairfield University after acquiring two neighbouring estates from the Brewster Jennings and Walter Lashar families, making it the 26th Jesuit college or university in the United States.
