Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU), also known as Alabama A&M, is a public, historically black, land-grant university located in Normal, Huntsville, Alabama. Founded in 1875, it officially adopted its current name in 1969. Originally established as one of approximately 180 "normal schools" by state governments in the 19th century, AAMU was founded to train teachers for the rapidly expanding public school system. Of those schools, 23—including AAMU—were specifically created to prepare African Americans to teach in segregated schools. Many of these institutions grew steadily, with most becoming state colleges in the early 20th century and state universities by the late 20th century.
AAMU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Historic District, also known as the Normal Hill College Historic District, includes 28 buildings and four structures listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Campus
The Olmsted Brothers firm designed the campus grounds, giving Alabama A&M University a beautiful and historically significant landscape. In 2002, the J.F. Drake Memorial Learning Resources Center was renovated, adding nearly 15,000 square feet (1,400 m²). The expanded center includes a Distance Learning Auditorium, conference rooms, study spaces, classrooms, lounges, and a computer lab.
Located in the historic James H. Wilson Building, the State Black Archives Research Center and Museum preserves valuable cultural resources, while the University Archives on the building's third floor houses an extensive collection of AAMU-related documents, letters, and photographs. Louis Crews Stadium, the sixth-largest in Alabama, sits next to the Alabama A&M Events Center. Opened in 2022, this multipurpose venue hosts basketball games, commencements, and other campus events.
