What is the German language level required to study in Germany?

Hello, I am looking forward to applying to some universities in Germany next year. I was curious to know about the minimum German level to study in Germany. I know that there are English taught courses available but will learning German help to apply to more universities and programs? Please let me know about the German level required to study Masters in Germany.
