Is toefl preferred over ielts in US

Question

Is it true that toefl is preferred over ielts in US. Im planning to apply for spring and have booked my slot for ielts. Now some people told me fhat its better to write toefl if its for US. Can someone shed some light on this .

Both of those are language Proficiency exam and you just have to score the min from either of them to qualify for further application processing and are not a deciding factor for your admission's . 
You can check on official ETS website, there's a chart that shows the equivalent score of Toefl to IELTS, So that shows that there's not much difference on their importance.
I'd suggest taking up IELTS as it would be in a calmer environment than compared to TOEFL and you might get distracted(From my Experience)
