Overview

There are 3 plans available for the MS: research (Plan A), projects (Plan B), or coursework (Plan D) and two for the PhD (entering with or without an MS). For all plans, note that the approval of the Advisor is required, particularly for out-of-department courses (e.g. ED51 00 is not allowed), and all Graduate School requirements must be met.

Courses Required:

  • Thesis Option: This plan requires a research thesis prepared under the supervision of an advisor. A thesis describes a research investigation and its results.
    • 30 approved credits minimum
    • 20 credit minimum of coursework consisting of:
    • 12 credits minimum of 5000 level or higher EE courses (not including EE 5990)
    • 9 credits maximum of 3000-4000 level if approved by the Graduate Academic Advisor
    • 6 to 1 0 research credits EE 5990
    • 3 credits maximum of co-op work experience
    • 3 credits maximum EE 5805 (directed study)
    • provided the overall GPA of 3.0 is attained
  • Report Option: This plan requires an independent study project and report conducted and prepared under the supervision of an advisor.
    • 24 credit minimum of coursework consisting of:
    • 12 credits minimum of 5000 level or higher EE courses (not including EE 5991)
    • 12 credits maximum of 3000-4000 level if approved by the Graduate Academic Advisor
    • 2 to 6 project credits EE 5991
    • 3 credits maximum of co-op work experience
    • 3 credits maximum EE 5805 (directed study)
  • Coursework Option
    • 18 credits minimum of 5000 level or higher EE courses (not including EE 5990 or EE 5991 )
    • 12 credits maximum of 3000-4000 level if approved by Graduate Academic Advisor
    • 3 credits maximum of co-op work experience
    • No oral examination

Opportunities

There is great value in real-world experience and hands-on learning. These short-term work/learning experiences allow students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom while gaining professional work experience. For these reasons, automotive engineering students are required to complete a six-month internship before graduation. Internships are a minimum of six months at the same institution and can be domestic or international industrial internships or as a part of Deep Orange.
