How to build a strong profile to stand out from the rest of the applicants?

Profile building is always perceived as a tricky task by students aspiring to study abroad as not a lot can be done to improve the profile by the time students begin their application process. However, there are certain things that should be taken care of in order to stand out from the rest of the applicants. While long and demanding, the application process to study abroad can also be exciting and rewarding since it can lead you to a brighter, more fulfilling future. Especially when the acceptance rates for the universities in the US range anywhere from as low as 4.8% to as high as 92.9%, differentiating yourself from the crowd becomes all the more important as that is how unpredictable the admissions in abroad universities could be. The following 5 factors will help you build a strong profile: 1. Extracurricular Activities All-around development of students, and not just academic achievements, are especially emphasized by the majority of universities. Here’s how you can do it. > Take Up Online Course - certificate courses online from websites like edX or Coursera about certain topics that intrigue you and are relevant to the Master’s course. > Participate in Inter-School Competitions - to showcase your non-academic skills. > Take up Offline Classes - to develop a hobby. > Join an NGO - this is highly valued by US Universities as well as good for your personal growth and development. 2. Detailed Timeline for Spring 2023 Intake

The spring intake is also called the January intake. The spring intake is the period between January and May. So, if you are a planning to apply for the spring intake, here’s a detailed timeline to help you navigate through the process and timeline - 1. Standardized Tests - February 2022 to May 2022 - You should prepare for the IELTS/TOEFL, GMAT, GRE tests and appear for them well on time to avoid last minute stress around the same. - The deadlines for spring applications are mostly till September end, so it’s better to appear for the tests at least 3-4 months prior to it to get your results on time. NOTE : Allow yourself some buffer time of at least 2 months just in case you need to reappear for the test due to unexpected/ dissatisfactory results. So in this case, try to appear for the tests maximum by may last week, so that by 2nd week of June you can get your result. If you need to retake the test, you can do so by July end and receive results by august 2nd week max. 2. Shortlist Universities - April 2022 to May 2022 - Once you get the results of your standardized tests, you can start shortlisting universities keeping which match the minimum criteria of the scores you’ve received. - Shortlisting takes around a month, where you can categorize the universities into 3 types : Safe, Target and Ambitious. You can place 2-4 universities in each category. 3. Application Components : SOP, LOR, CV - April mid to June 2022 - A Statement of Purpose is a decisive aspect of the complete application process which is an essay drafted to illuminate your aspirations, achievements, and proficiency to the admissions committee of the relevant university. The main aim of the essay is to convince the evaluator that you deserve admission as you are an ideal fit for the program. And ideally takes upto 1-2 months to create. - You can start asking your recommenders in may to allow them a months time to work on the same. You should have the LORs ready maximum by june mid/end. - Apart from this, also work on a perfectly crafted resume which won’t take more than 2 weeks. 4. Apply to universities - June 2022 to September 2022 Most universities roll out applications by mid june. The sooner you apply, more are the chances for you to get a scholarship. This is the time when you can even shortlist and apply to some more universities. But, make sure to not apply in the last week in a hassle. 5. Wait for acceptance letters - September 2022 to November 2022 - This is the period when you start receiving admission letters from the Universities. Nonetheless, this duration is the testing phase of your patience level. Some universities usually take around 2-3 months to revert. 6. Work on your post-admission checklist - November 2022 to January 2023 - Your post-admission process principally involves getting the I-20 immigration form and F1 Visa. - Visa processing is one of the demanding tasks. You need to procure the I-20 immigration form, fill up DS-160, look out for slots, and prepare for the visa interview. - The entire process involves handling numerous documents, including the passport and finances. 7. Accommodation - November 22 to January 2023 - You can connect with students who are admitted to the same university/program and hunt for accommodation. - It’s best to connect with current university students for the best advice on looking for accommodation in or near the university. 8.
