Can LORs be self-written? How should an LOR be framed? And a LOR taken from whom would have more weightage?

I am planning to apply for Masters in the US, I want to know how important is an LOR for an admission to a Masters program in the USH how should we write them, what must be included and what is not to be included? Also, taking LORs from whom would make a better impact on the admission?
